Bye-bye Ghetto Bed, Hello, Big Girl Bed!

Posted by Heather at Sunday, September 11, 2011 0 comments
Katy, scaling "Mount Bed" (check out that flexibility!!)

Katy, pretending to "sleep" in her new bed (because "pretending to sleep" is really all the "sleep" Katy does :-/).

Katy's Big Girl Bed

Katy, sitting pretty in her new Big Girl Bed

Gone are the days of the ghetto bed, Katy. You have now officially graduated from a mattress on the floor surrounded by a baby gate to a full-fledged mattress and box spring on a bed frame! Grandpa Jones and Daddy put together you Big Girl bed while Nana, you and I were out shopping, yesterday. When we came back, you were very excited to try out your new bed! You climbed and bounced and had a good old time testing out the new sleeping arrangement. Come bedtime, however, you were not as thrilled with the new digs because you knew it meant nighttime. Potty training, Big Girl Bed- watch our world, our Katy is GROWING UP!

Ghetto Crib

Posted by Heather at Tuesday, March 01, 2011 0 comments
There are lots of things that childless parents say about those that do have children. "I'll never do THAT...", "My child would never do/say/act like THAT...","I would never buy THAT...", etc., etc. Then, the magical day happens when your baby is born and suddenly all of that goes out the window and you are doing all of THAT and more!

Case in point; the ghetto crib. What exactly is the ghetto crib?!? Well, most of you blog readers know that we've been struggling for some time now, with getting our now-one year old to sleep IN her crib, by HERSELF. Every time Katy would fall asleep and we'd try to transfer her to the crib she'd instantly wake up and we'd have to start the whole getting-to-sleep routine all over again. Or, we'd successfully transfer her to her crib only to be awoken by her cries an hour later. We'd do it again and again, finally succumbing in the wee hours of the morning to pulling Katy into bed with us just so that we could get some sleep, too instead of getting up, down and not being able to fall back to sleep.

Introduce a plain, old mattress on the floor, baby gate around it, pillows on all sides and voila (!), the ghetto crib is born! I can actually get Katy to fall asleep in the "crib"(by herself!) AND she stays asleep for several consecutive hours. Granted, it's not always uninterrupted sleep, but it's a VAST improvement to no sleep at all!

Getting back to the "I'll nevers..." Experts say not to put pillows, blankets, stuffed animals in the bed with a child as they pose suffocation risks. Experts say not to co-sleep. Well, sometimes, I wonder if these "experts" every really had any children because sometimes, you just need to do what works for you and your child. Don't worry, Katy is safe- we check on her regularly and she's old enough to be able to roll over and remove anything that might cause a breathing problem. Also, the ghetto crib goes against every grain in my interior designer body- it's not pretty but it works!

I'd post a picture of the ghetto crib except Katy is sleeping and I'm not waking her up... ;-P

Bedtime Battles

Posted by Heather at Tuesday, October 05, 2010 0 comments
There is a Berestain Bears' book titled, "Bedtime Battle" http://www.amazon.com/Berenstain-Bears-Bedtime-Battle/dp/0060573813 that talks about the cubs and their unwillingness to go to bed peacefully- trying every antic in the book to prolong bedtime. I believe that this should be your new theme book, Katy. After a pleasant day of playing, eating, running errands, every night dissolves into a battle to get you to sleep. You may fall asleep peacefully but you never STAY asleep. There are nights when you wake every hour. We've tried to let you cry it out, we've tried attending to your needs, we've tried bedtime routines, soothing sounds, key bedtime words, nursing you to sleep... The ONLY way I can get you to sleep for any length of time is if you are sleeping in my arms! Katy, will you ever sleep?!! Will Daddy and I ever get to sleep?!!

Crib Recall

Posted by Heather at Thursday, June 24, 2010 0 comments
Dun, dun, dun... it was bound to happen! With all the recent product recalls- a lot of them being drop-side cribs- we were bound to be affected by a recall sooner or later. Today was our turn when two million cribs from seven manufacturers were recalled due to malfunctions in drop-side cribs causing injury and entrapment to babies. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/37893325/ns/today-today_health/. So, we looked up the crib information and serial number, logged onto the manufacturer's website and ordered the free repair kit. The kit is supposed to lock the sides of the crib in place and is expected to arrive in two to three weeks. Don't worry, Baby Girl, your safety is our number one concern!

Party in Katy's Crib (cont.)

Posted by Heather at Thursday, May 06, 2010 0 comments
Guess what you did, last night, Katy? You slept in your crib the WHOLE NIGHT!! After yesterday's success napping in the crib, we decided to see if we'd get anywhere in getting you to sleep through the night in the crib. We put you down around seven PM and you fussed for a bit so we had to go in and check on you several times. However, you finally fell asleep for two straight hours. Then, you woke up for a feeding and a changing and then you slept for another SIX hours! Amazing....!

Party at Katy's Crib (cont.)

Posted by Heather at Wednesday, May 05, 2010 0 comments
Today, we hit a record, Katy. You fell asleep in your crib for nap time not once but TWICE!!

Like we do every morning after we wake you, feed you and dress you, we put you down in the crib to talk to your friends, the Lumpies, while Daddy and I got ready for the day. When Daddy left for work, you were still talking away to your friends. I went about getting things done when I realized that I didn't hear anything coming from the nursery. So, I peeked my head in and sure enough you had fallen asleep on your own AND in your CRIB! You slept in your crib for about 50 minutes.

After this morning's successful crib time, I decided to try it again this afternoon. After some crying and fussing you finally soothed yourself to sleep by sucking on your thumb- this took about 15-20 minutes.

Maybe we are getting somewhere on this whole crib thing, after all...

Party at Katy's Crib!

Posted by Heather at Monday, April 12, 2010 0 comments
As I've mentioned before, you do not like to sleep in your crib, Katy. You much prefer your "Happy Chair" and that is where you sleep most nights and naps. However, Sunday night, you were so sleepy that when Daddy was changing your diaper in the middle of the night, you fell asleep on the changing table. So, Daddy took you (along with the changing table pad) and laid you in the crib. You slept like this for one hour- a new record!

Nesting

Custom Cornice Board

Rocker from the Jones side of the family

Everybody talks about this "nesting instinct" that comes about right before going into labor and giving birth. Since your Daddy and I are already neurotic when it comes to cleanliness and order (we are bracing ourselves for the havoc and chaos about to come about with your arrival!), I'm not sure we'll be able to tell the difference between "nesting" and our normal "OCD."

This weekend, we are going to give the house a good, thorough cleaning in preparation of YOU and all the guests that are sure to follow. The kitchen cabinets are labeled and ready for guests searching around for a spoon, a towel, whatever. There are more than a dozen meals in the freezer ready to be pulled out at moment's notice for the nights when things get a little crazy around here. Daddy had an extra house key made for visiting family members. The car seats have been in the cars for quite some time now and we will finish "baby-proofing" the house, this weekend (though, I'm told that you never really finish "baby-proofing" until you find out what the kid is really up and moving).

Your nursery walls are a cheery yellow with a custom cornice board. Daddy worked hard at measuring and upholstering the cornice board that we covered with Robert Allen Hush-a-bye nursery rhyme fabric. The furniture is a medium wood and includes a rocking chair from the Jones side of the family and a tall dresser from your Daddy's childhood.

The diaper bag is packed with essentials and all of your clothes (girly, do you have the clothes thanks to all of the baby showers and our friends, the Foleys and the Batys!) are hung in the closet by size and then by ROY G. BIV (see, I told you we were neurotic). There are a few items that we still need to get and take care of this weekend, but for the most part, I believe we are as ready as we'll ever be- nobody is truly READY.
