Sew Yourself Some Love Blog Tour- Featuring Patterns for Pirates Boundless Dress and Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan
Recently, I've been having fun sewing for ME!!
I've sewn closet-fuls of cloths for Lil' Miss- literally!! Dresses, pants, leggings, skirts, tops, pajamas, jackets and Oh.So.Many.DRESSES!!!! I love sewing for Katy and I will continue to do so as long as she'll allow me. However, sewing for myself seems like the next likely step in my sewing journey.
I've been testing some new women's patterns and participating in some fun blog tours. One of those fun blog tours is the Pattern Revolution "Sew Yourself Some Love" Blog Tour. Meant to promote the beauty within all of us, Pattern Revolution dedicates the whole month of February to encouraging sewists everywhere to, "...take a little bit of time (to) sew something for yourself- even just one thing!" It also reminds sewists to, "...take care of yourself so that you can better care for all the others in your life."
So.... here goes... I'm sewing myself some love, this February...!!
********************************************************************************
I've sewn several Patterns for Pirates PDF sewing patterns. However, just as Lil' Miss loves her dresses, so do I! Dresses make for easy dressing- throw one on and you are instantly put-together. I wear a dress at least once a week. So, it only seemed natural to "Sew myself some love" with a dress pattern- the Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress, to be exact!
The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress is written for knit fabrics. The dress is fitted in the bodice and sleeves. The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress PDF sewing pattern includes the following features:
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress is sized for XXS-Plus3X (A nice, large size range).
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress includes three sleeve options- short, 3/4 or long.
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress includes four skirt lengths- mini, dress, tea and maxi length.
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress PDF sewing pattern includes pattern pieces for the bodice, sleeves, optional in-seam pocket and cutting measurements for the skirt (less to print!).
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress can be empire waist, or at-waist. (Ready-to-wear dresses that hit at the waist tend to hit me funny and not be so flattering. By sewing my own Boundless dress, I am able to control where the waist hits and make the most flattering silhouette for me :)
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress PDF sewing pattern includes a sizing chart, fabric requirement chart, cutting chart, finished length chart.
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress includes step-by-step instructions with photographs for each step.
-The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress features no-trim pattern pieces. This pattern does NOT include layered pattern pieces- can I make this post my personal request to make the Boundless dress pattern pieces layered? Pretty please with a cherry on top?! ;-) (The Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress came out before the designer started doing layered pattern pieces).

After reviewing the sizing chart, I sewed up an empire waist, 3/4 sleeve, dress-length, size medium Boundless dress with modifications. The cozy french terry was purchased locally at Hobby Lobby (on clearance-yay!).
My Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress modifications were as follows:
-I took length off of the skirt so that the dress would fit my petite frame. I wanted the dress to hit right at the knees.
-I also took about 1" off of the bodice. In hindsight, I probably should have taken another 1/2" off in order to get a more empire fit.
-Also, because I was using fabric from my stash, I did not have enough to fully line the bodice. Instead, I used bias tape to finish the neckline (flipped to the inside so that it's not visible from the outside).
-Fabric choice matters (as it does in any pattern). In this case, the french terry fabric that I used was not super stretchy. Therefore, that affected the fit slightly.
The Boundless dress neckline is a bit lower than I typically wear (front and back bodice pieces are the same). So, next time I sew up a Boundless, I'll probably raise it a bit. However, paired with a scarf and a cozy cardi and I'm ready to go!
I had sew much fun sewing myself some love with the Patterns for Pirates Boundless dress!

Can I get a "What-what!" for those beautiful, matched stripes?!!

The Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan, "...is a dolman sleeved, loose-fitting front open cardigan.". The Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan PDF sewing pattern includes the following features:
-The Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan is sized for girl's 2- women size 22. That means that with just one pattern, I can make myself AND my daughter matching Cocoon Cardigans!
-The Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan is written in both French and English. (the designer behind Jalie is French Canadian. This makes the tutorial a bit cumbersome and a little confusing to follow, but it sure hits a wide market!).
-The Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan PDF sewing pattern includes a sizing chart, a pattern layout diagram and fabric requirement chart.
-The Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan PDF sewing pattern includes numbered step-by-step instructions with English on the left and French on the right. Shaded diagrams accompany the instructions.

After reviewing the sizing chart, I chose to sew up a size 8 Cocoon Cardigan. The gray sweater knit was purchased locally off the clearance table at Hobby Lobby (for less than $3/yard- score!).
While I sewed The Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan as instructed, I felt like it was REALLY long for my 5'-0" height. There is a shorten/lengthen line included in the pattern and I'll be sure to use that with my next Cocoon Cardigan that I sew up (and there WILL be a next time!). Also, while the Cocoon Cardigan is meant to be over-sized, I felt like the size 8 was a little too over-sized. Next time, I think I'll size down a bit, on top of shortening.
I had sew much fun sewing myself some love with the Jalie Patterns Cocoon Cardigan!

Pattern Revolution- Women's BundleUP Blog Tour- ModKid, Malibu Misses Dress
ModKid Malibu Misses Dress
Hello, Pattern Revolution-ers!! Here's my second pattern for the Pattern Revolution Women's BundleUp blog tour- the ModKid , Malibu Misses Dress!
This new-to-me designer, ModKid , did not disappoint! With the Malibu Misses Dress, I was able to created a great summer staple dress. It's comfy, it's cute and it's easy to sew. I just may make one in every color.... :-)
Here are the ModKid Malibu Misses Dress pattern details;
-The Malibu Misses Dress is written for sizes XS-XXL.
-There are two skirt length options for the Malibu Misses Dress- Mini or Maxi.
-There are two back options for the Malibu Misses Dress- Cross Over or Full.
-The Malibu Misses Dress is meant to be sewn in knit fabric.
-There is also a coordinating Malibu Girls Dress available for purchase separately. (Perfect for mother/daughter matching outfits!)
-The Malibu Misses Dress PDF sewing pattern includes a fabric requirements chart, a sizing chart, cutting instructions and pattern layout diagram.
ModKid Malibu Misses Dress- Full Back
The Malibu Misses Dress is an all-knit pattern. So, I used my serger for most of the construction of this dress. I did use my regular sewing machine to topstitch around the neck and arm bands and hem the bottom skirt. It's a quick sew- it probably took me two hours from start to finish. I love a quick sew!
The Malibu Misses Dress PDF sewing pattern includes simple, step-by-step diagrams and illustrations. With very clear labels and shading, the Malibu Misses Dress directions are easy to follow and easy to understand. There are inspiration photos at the beginning and end. The Malibu Misses Dress only has pattern pieces for the front and back bodices. The bindings and skirt are all done from a cutting chart. So, there are minimal pieces to print, cut and tape together- one of my favorite types of patterns!
My only suggestion for the ModKid Malibu Misses Dress PDF sewing pattern is that I wish that it included set measurements for each arm band and neck band (as opposed to just instructing me to cut two WOF strips from my band material). I like to have at least a guideline band measurement so that each arm is even.
I love that the Malibu Misses Dress fits so perfectly into my own personal style. It's easy to sew and it's easy to wear. It's casual, yet put together. I definitely see lots more of the Malibu Misses Dresses in my future!!
If you would like to purchase the ModKid Malibu Misses Dress PDF sewing pattern (along with some of the other great patterns included in this season's Pattern Revolution Women's BundleUp ), please go here. You won't be disappointed! Happy Sewing!

Pattern Revolution- Women's BundleUP Blog Tour- Golden Rippy, Mykonos Tankini Collection (MODIFIED)
Golden Rippy Mykonos Tankini Collection
Today is my turn on the Pattern Revolution Women's BundleUP Tour and I couldn't be more excited to share my latest sewing project with you! I sewed up the Golden Rippy Mykonos Tankini Collection. You heard me correctly- I sewed MYSELF a bathing suit! I mean, what kind of crazy person does that sort of thing?!?! Me, that's who! And, with the Golden Rippy Mykonos Tankini Collection PDF sewing pattern, you can, too!!
Let's go over some pattern basics, first;
-The Mykonos Tankini Collection comes in Ladies sizes XXS-XXXL. That's a generous size range!
-The Mykonos Tankini Collection is a mix and match pattern- there are three top options (Empire waist, Peplum and Triangle Top) and three bottom options (regular bikini bottoms, skirted bikini bottoms and boy shorts). YOU choose which bottom and which top most flatters your figure!
-Sizing chart, fabric requirements chart, cutting guide and pattern layout guide are all provided in the Mykonos Tankini Collection PDF sewing pattern tutorial.
The great thing about sewing something for yourself is the fact that you can alter it to fit your body- bumps, lumps and all! I sewed the regular bikini bottoms and the (modified) empire waist top. I sewed up a small (bust and bottom) but graded out to a medium for my waist. I bought my swimsuit fabric, swimsuit lining and swim elastic from Hancock Fabrics.
First off, the directions for the Mykonos Tankini Collection are nice and clear. This was my first time using a Golden Rippy PDF sewing pattern. Up until this point, I've never sewn myself a bathing suit. So, I needed a pattern that would hold my hand and tell me exactly what to do, when to do it- the Mykonos Tankini Collection does just that! Simple shaded illustrations with helpful arrows accompany each step-by-step direction.
I really enjoyed the fact that the Mykonos Tankini Collection has lots of great options to create the perfect bathing suit for you and your body type. There are three options for both bottoms and top. It's just like shopping for a suit, but better because you get to determine the fit!
Now, let's talk about my modifications (not included in the Mykonos Tankini Collection PDF sewing pattern). I first sewed this suit up in one evening- the bottoms were a cinch and fit me perfectly. There were no modifications to the bottom- I love the way they fit- great coverage in the back and they sit perfectly on my hips.
The top, on the other hand.... well.... let's just say it wasn't a perfect fit. I don't necessarily believe it was the pattern's fault- I just wanted a suit that fit me and my proportions better. So, after scrapping my first top (I would HIGHLY recommend making a muslin of this suit. That way, you can get a feeling for the fit and styling and adjust accordingly), I started over (on my top). On my scrapped, first attempt top, I noted what worked and what didn't. Then, using the Mykonos Tankini Collection as my guide, I made a top to fit me.
Here are my own, personal modifications to the Mykonos Tankini Collection (not included in the PDF sewing pattern);
-I took the Empire waist pattern piece and lengthened the bottom hem of the top by 5".
-I added a 10"x2" panel on the inside, sides to create ruching (aka, conceal any extra "fluff.").
-I added a "cinch" to the center bust panel to help define the area.
-I took the front top piece and doubled it in height. Then, I gathered the sides of my extra piece and attached it on top of another front top piece (cut to correct size).
-Last but not least, instead of making two straps to tie together around the neck, I just made one. Sewing the elastic into the teeny tiny strap tube just about did me in. One was all I could manage! So, I took my one strap, measured around my neck and sewed it into the suit permanently- nothing to tie, or bother with while chasing after my little fish at the pool!
Overall, I was really pleased with the Mykonos Tankini Collection PDF sewing pattern. It really helped me overcome my fear (and the mystery) of sewing myself a bathing suit. By using the Mykonos Tankini Collection as my base and guide, I was able to create a bathing suit that had just the right amount of coverage and support for me. Love that!
Now, go forth and purchase the Mykonos Tankini Collection as part of the Pattern Revolution Women's BundleUP sale! There are so many great patterns included in the sale- you won't want to miss the bundled pricing.

Pattern Revolution- Girl's BundleUP Blog Tour- Jocole, Wideleg Pants
Jocole Wideleg Pants
Hello, Pattern Revolution-ers!! Heather from All Things Katy, here. Today, it is my turn on the Pattern Revolution Girls' BundleUP Blog Tour and I'm going to introduce you to the Jocole Wideleg Pants (for girls).
So, without further ado, let's get started! The Jocole Wideleg Pants (for girls) is the pint-sized version of the women's pattern (also by the same name, Ladies Wideleg Pants. This PDF sewing pattern features the style of structured trousers, with the added comfort benefit of easy on/off yoga waistband- definitely a winner!!
Okay, let's go over the basics of the The Jocole Wideleg Pants (for girls) pattern:

Okay, let's go over the basics of the The Jocole Wideleg Pants (for girls) pattern:
-This pattern is for sizes doll-14- a nice big size range! Plus, what little girl doesn't love a dolly and me matching outfit??!?!?
-There are three different lengths included in the pattern- shorts, capris or pants.

-Like I stated before, The Jocole Wideleg Pants (for girls) has a yoga waistband. The waistband can be cut to skinny, regular or foldover height.
-Like I stated before, The Jocole Wideleg Pants (for girls) has a yoga waistband. The waistband can be cut to skinny, regular or foldover height.
I sewed up a size 5t with inseam pockets. I used a pinstripe denim fabric that has been lingering in my stash since...... (almost afraid to admit it).... my college years. *gulp* So, yeah, over ten years old... good thing denim is always in style! For the yoga waistband (I did regular height), I used some lovely jegging knit that I purchased from the lovely Purpleseamstress Fabrics.
Likes:
-I LOVE the tailored look of the pants and my daughter LOVES the comfort of the stretchy yoga waistband! Seriously, this is, hands down the best of both worlds- Mama gets style, Lil' Miss gets comfort. Everybody is happy!!
-I love the wide size range included in the pattern. Because the pattern goes from doll to size 14, I know I'll be able to hang onto this pattern for years to come! And, because of the timeless styling, it will not go out of style, anytime too soon!
-Lil' Miss loves pockets, so any pattern that includes them are a winner in her book. The pocket opening is wide enough for her to get her hands in and out of the pocket. I've sewn up pockets before, from other patterns, and the opening never quite seems to be large enough to be comfortable. While I did the inseam pockets for this pattern, I'd love to try the patch pockets in a contrasting/coordinating fabric- how fun would that be?!
-I like that the back is higher than the front. This means no peek-a-boo cheeky buns ;-P

Suggestions:
-In all honesty, there isn't a whole lot that I dislike about this pattern. In my opinion, the inseam pocket placement was a little low for my daughter. Next time I make these pants (and there will definitely be a next time!), I'll place the pocket 1" from the bottom of the knit waistband (opposed to the instructed 1 1/2". This is pretty minor, though, and it could depend on your child's own personal measurements.
-Another thing- there weren't any really good pictures of the knit waistband and the back of the back of the pants included in the tutorial. I really like to see all options and all sides of a pattern before I purchase.

Jocole Wideleg Pants- Back
I really enjoyed sewing up the Jocole Wideleg Pants. This was my first PDF pattern that used diagrams and color-coded drawings (instead of photographs) in the instructions. I was unsure at first, but the instructions were quite clear, this way. There were no questions and it was a quick sew. The Jocole Wideleg Pants are a great staple to any little girl's wardrobe. I can really and truly say that this is a new favorite pattern and a great addition to any PDF sewing pattern collection! Now, go forth and Bundle up with the Girl's BundleUp on Pattern Revolution!!

Pattern Revolution- Girl's BundleUP Blog Tour- Love Notions, Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection
Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection
Hello, Pattern Revolution-ers! (and readers of All Things Katy... all five of you... Hi, Mom!! ;-P).
Today, I have something really fun to share with you- the newest pdf sewing pattern by Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection (part of the Pattern Revolution Girl's BundleUP)!! Made entirely of knit, this top/ruffled bottom set makes sure your little girl is looking super cute AND super comfy!
Okay, let's start by going over the basics of the Love Notions Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection:
-This pattern is for sizes 2T-14- a nice big size range!
-This shirt has a yoke back detail and shirt tail hem. Shoulders are slightly gathered with cap sleeves.
-You have the option of either making ruffled capris or ruffled shorts.
-The pattern also includes direction for a faux drawstring.
Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection
I sewed a straight up, size 5t top and ruffled capri bottom. I did not include the faux drawstring. Also, I used a serger (my first time!!) to construct both the top and bottom. I only used my regular sewing machine to gather and hem (using a walking foot and ball-point needle). It is not absolutely necessary to use a serger for the Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection. In fact, the directions specifically talk about using a stretch stitch and a regular sewing machine. I used a lightweight cotton jersey (probably too lightweight, in retrospect) from Hancock's for the top and ruffle. I used a cotton lycra from Purpleseamstress Fabrics for the pants and neck collar. The cotton lycra was PERFECT for this pattern! This was also my first time sewing up a Love Notions pattern (and, now I know it won't be my last :-).
Likes:
-I LOVE that the Love Notions, Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection includes an option to only print the size you are going to sew!! No mixed up lines and unmatched hemlines. Perfect!
-Pattern pieces line up PERFECTLY!! There is no "fudging" to make sure the back and front pieces match up- they just do because the pattern pieces are correct. There is a lot to be said for accuracy and this pattern has it! Love that!
-Along the left-hand side of tutorial are different links that you cant jump to, simply by clicking on it. "Troubleshooting," "Pattern to Print," and "Glossary" are just some of the options. This makes is really convenient and easy to read through the directions and then just jump to whatever page you need to.
-The pattern piece layout diagram on slide three is crucial to correctly piecing together everything. I would have been lost without it! I really appreciated that each pattern piece was numbered. This helps when you set everything to print, walk away, then get a paper jam and have to figure out which pieces already printed and which pieces need to be reprinted..... not that I would know from personal experience.... ;-P
-The pattern directions are easy to read and follow. I've sewn through dozens (dare I say it- hundreds?!?) of PDF patterns and I can really appreciate a clear, well-written pattern, such as Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection. Not once did I have to stop and scratch my head, wondering what I was supposed to do next.
Suggestions:
-Probably my biggest complaint about this pattern is the fact that it takes 21 pages of pattern pieces to print, cut and tape together (for the capri option). Some of the small pieces- such as the sleeves- are spread out over several pages (instead of just being on one piece of paper). This is pretty inconsequential, though, as the end result is well worth the extra ink and time cutting/taping together pieces.
-The only other thing that I disliked about the tutorial is the fact that there really wasn't a good picture and/or line drawing of the back of the shirt. Before purchasing a pattern, I really like to see it from all angles. So, it kind of bugs me that you can't see what the back of the shirt (The back is really cute, too! It's got a gathered yoke detail that makes it different than just a plain t-shirt). All of the other pictures in the tutorial are clear, concise and fun.
Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection- Back and Detail
Overall, I really enjoyed sewing up the Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection! With the use of the serger, this definitely was a quick sew! The pattern is labeled "beginner," but I would personally consider it more "adventurous beginner" since knits can be tricky to work with, Now, if you know me, you know that knits are not exactly my favorite to work with. However, I got myself a serger, recently, and I knew that I just kind of had to "jump in," in order to get comfortable using it. The Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection was the perfect opportunity to get my serger out of the box and put to good use!!
Using other patterns, I recently sewed up six sets of PJs for all of my nieces, nephews and daughter for Christmas. Afterwards, I swore I wouldn't touch another PJ/Loungewear pattern for a LOOOONG time. However, after I saw the Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection, I knew that I couldn't say no! The Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection is comfy, girly-cute with it's ruffled, curved-hem bottoms and best of all an all-around solid pattern! The Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection is definitely a keeper and I know that I'll be sewing up more of these, in the future!!
Now, if only the Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection would ensure that Lil' Miss would sleep through the night..... Ha!!
Love Notions, the Jam Jam Sleepwear Collection
(Lil' Miss wore her Jam Jams hours after the photos were taken- that's a surefire sign of a great pattern!!)
