Love Notions Handmade Holiday Tour- Dolly Laundry Day Tee

Posted by Heather at Tuesday, December 05, 2017 3 comments

The holidays are upon us and it's full steam ahead with gift giving AND MAKING! My seven (and three quarters, as she so proudly adds) daughter LOVES her American Girl doll, Samantha! I joke that Sam is the fourth member of our little family because she joins us on vacations, holidays and life in general. ;) That being said, I typically end up sewing up something for Samantha to "unwrap" Christmas morning. Hahaha!

Two whole years ago, I tested the Love Notions Girl's Li'l LDT and loved it! Fast forward to today and that dress is now a top! Thanks to some begging suggestions, Tami (the talent and brains behind Love Notions) was kind enough to draft out a Dolly version of the Laundry Day Tee. YAYAYAY!!! Oh, and did I mention that it's a FREE pattern on the website?! #merrychristmas!)I had just enough matching fabric in my stash to make a dolly version of the Laundry Day Tee. #Twinks

Missy is going to LOVE matching her doll! The Love Notions Dolly Laundry Day Tee is the perfect, quick knit pattern to use up large fabric scraps AND gift to all the special little girls on your Christmas list! It's so simple to sew up that I think I'll be able whip up a couple more matching Love Notions Dolly Laundry Day Tees in time for Christmas morning!

Merry Christmas and Happy Sewing!

Mason Jar Gifts

Decorative Pillows

Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is in FULL swing!! As any busy family knows, holidays also mean gift giving- teacher gifts, after school care gifts, mail carrier gifts, neighbor gifts, hostess gifts.... Just a little something to show those special helpers in your (or your child's) life that you care and appreciate them! At Home Stores is a veritable treasure trove of all things holiday, home and organization! #MyReason #AtHomeStores

*********************************************************
I started out with a set of four Mason Jar Glasses (found in the glassware section of At Home Stores). I loved the fact that the Mason Jar Glasses included a chalkboard label on each glass- a great way to personalize your gift!

My first Mason Jar gift idea was to create "Southern Wine Glasses." I found some small glass candle stick holders (located in the candle section of At Home Stores). Then, I had my husband epoxy the candle stick holders to the bottom of two of the Mason Jar Glasses. After letting the glasses dry overnight, I filled them with jingle bells and personalized the labels. Pair the "Southern Wine Glasses" with a bottle of wine (or, beverage of your choice) and you've got a great hostess gift!

Start out with this....

...and end up with this...!

Southern Wine Glasses

Since I was only able to find two small glass candle stick holders and I had a set of four Mason Jar Glasses, I wanted to find a special way to gift the remaining two Mason Jar Glasses. While waiting in line to check out, I saw some bags of Lindor Chocolate Truffles. So, I grabbed a couple bags of truffles and filled the remaining two Mason Jar Glasses with Lindor Chocolate Truffles. I plan to personalize the labels and add a festive ribbon- tada!- a perfect gift to give a neighbor!

Neighbor Gift

*********************************************************
Now, because I love my sewing machine (as most regular readers of All Things Katy already know;-), I also wanted to find a quick and easy way to gift something (semi) sewn. I found this set of four burlap holiday place mats for $14.99 (located in the holiday linens aisle) and I knew they'd make cute decorative pillows.

Holiday Place mats

I already had some soft polyfil leftover from a previous project, but At Home Stores also sells bags of polyfil.

Once I got the place mats home, I flipped (one at a time) them over and located the seam at one of the bottom corners.

Then, I used my trusty seam ripper and ripped out a couple of inches of seam. By doing so, I created a empty pocket between the muslin backing and the burlap place mat front.

Next, I filled the place mat will polyfil. I filled the place mat pretty full, but still soft enough to get under my sewing machine presser foot and needle. After filling the place mat, I stitched the opening closed with my sewing machine.

Voila! (Almost) Instant, perfect decorative pillows out of burlap Holiday Place mats from At Home Stores! I loved these pillows so much that I just *might* keep them for myself! Heehee!

#MyReason to decorate and give to others this this holiday season? It's simple; I want to help create memories with my family and give those that have touched my life a tangible expression of my gratitude. Merry Christmas!

Wonder Woman!

Lil' Miss decided that she wanted to dress up as Wonder Woman, this year! Not quite sure how she settled on this costume as she's never really seen the cartoons/comics. No worries, though, this was an easy costume for me to sew up because I had the perfect PDF sewing pattern to use- Made for Mermaids Everyday Princess, Jasmine (as Wonder Woman)!

We'll be trick-or-treating around our neighborhood, this evening. Katy's best bud and his family will be joining us in the festivities. Should be a nice night weather-wise, too! Now, the trick is, can we get the kiddos to bed at a reasonable hour because Halloween is on a SCHOOL NIGHT...?!! :-P

Edited to Add Pictures:

Christmas 2015

Christmas Eve Dress, sewn by moi

Christmas 2015 was a quiet affair spent with the Jones grandparents. Katy was lucky enough to spend the whole week preceding Christmas with Nanny and Poppy Jones (Yay!) while Mommy and Daddy had to work (Boo!). She got to go to the library, Painted Pottery and out to lunch with the grandparents. Lucky girl!

We went to church as a family Christmas Eve. The 3PM service was packed at Elevation!

Christmas Eve Jones Family Picture

After we came home from church, we enjoyed a fun, fondue dinner. Lil' Miss got to open gift Christmas Eve (always Pjs). This year, though, it was a matching Dolly and Me Nightgown set for Katy and Samantha! (I swear, that doll is like a fourth member of our family- ha!).

#XmasJammies

The night before Christmas, Katy was super excited! We told her that she could come down no sooner than 7:30AM Christmas morning. Unbeknownst to Ted and I, she woke the grandparents up at 1:30AM to go open presents. The funny part was, Nanny was almost ready to let her do it (until Poppy glanced at his phone and realized that it was only 1:30AM in the morning!).Thankfully, they tucked her back in bed.

Then, at 3:30AM, Lil' Miss was kind enough to wake Ted and I up, too. However, this time, Ted tucked Katy back into bed.

Of course, when it was actually 7:30am in the morning (a decent time to wake up and open presents!), Lil' Miss was fast alseep and sawing logs.... haahhahahahhaha!

We finally got started around 8:30/9AM Christmas morning. Lil' Miss had a pile of presents to go through but she made quick work of it! She's a lucky little girl to have so many people in her life that not only shower her with gifts but love her through and through!!

If I were to pick a theme for this year's Christmas, I'd say it was a very Merry Shopkins Christmas. (Christmas 2013 was brought to you by My Little Ponies, last year was Frozen Themed ;-). Oh, those tiny, characterized plastic figurines of food, clothes and other shop-able items....! Their pull alludes me but they are super, duper popular with the under eight crowd and Katy is no exception. She LOVES Shopkins!!

Katy spent most of the day playing with her new toys. We ended the day with our traditional Chinese Take-out Dinner (no prep, non clean up- Merry Christmas to me!).

Merry Christmas, one and all!

A Vision To Remember- Christmas Stocking Pattern Review

Posted by Heather at Friday, December 18, 2015 1 comments
In the spirit of all things Christmas-y and the fact that Christmas is just one short week away (ONE WEEK, people!! Seven DAYS!!!), I present to you the final day of A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern blog tour! (You know, in case Santa's elves need to get cracking on some stockings/cute wrapping.... ;-)

This was my first time creating a "rag" type anything so I was definitely out of my element when I sewed up my stocking (As you might know from reading through previous All Things Katy! posts, I mostly sew clothing for my smart, beautiful, sometimes-sassy five-almost-six year old daughter ;). However, part of the beauty of learning to sew (and pretty much teaching myself), is that with each project, I get to learn something new, perfect old skills and gain new ones... such was the case with A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern.

First, I need to state that this free "pattern" is more of a list of directions.... and, to be honest, I was a little intimidated and confused by the lack of progress pictures throughout the tutorial.

Never fear, though, the online sewing community is a beautiful thing! With the help of some of my sew sisters (THANK YOU, Ladies!), I was able to figure things out and get going. Once I figure out what paired with what- the stocking came together in no time!

The first thing I need to state (to help others, like me, that might be a bit confused on how to start) is- sewing the A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern stocking is completely OPPOSITE of sewing a garment. For A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern it's WRONG sides together and the "hem" is facing out (that's what ends up being the fun, featured "ragged" element).

So, with that being said, I really wanted to include some of my own, personal progress pictures of my A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern....

Here goes....

(First, refer to the free A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern for the pattern and sew-along information. Trust me, everything that I say/picture from this point forward will make MUCH more sense if you do so ;-)

After you cut out all of the strips, go ahead and lay things out. For every strip of fabric that you see in the picture, there is a matching sized piece of flannel sitting beneath it, face up (ie, the flannel and the fabric strip are BOTH facing up). This really helped me get a feel for the flow of patterns. Also, by laying everything out, I was able to presumptively make sure that I didn't accidentally create two left feet (pun intended). Be sure to make MIRROR images!!!

Lay out your strips of fabric/flannel. Make sure to make MIRROR images!

Now, the A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern talks about "fabric sandwiches." This was pretty confusing to me- I couldn't figure out how many layers I was sewing up at once. Feel free to scroll through my pictures below....hopefully, if you are visual learner like I am, this will help...

"Fabric Sandwiches" In this picture are two of the strips that I laid out in the picture before. It goes fabric face down, flannel face down, flannel facing UP, fabric facing up. Sew along the LONG edge and continue to do so until you have one big piece of sewn together fabric. Tip- the flannel creates the INSIDE of the stocking.

How to assemble each strip and put them together. Once I figured out how to lay everything out, sewing up the stocking was breeze- just some straight stitches and I was good to go.

Sewing all the layers together.

Using an existing stocking as a template. A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern includes a printable stocking pattern. However, I already had a stocking that I liked the shape of, so, I just went with that.)

Notice the cut hems. Around step 13 of A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern, it talks about "cutting" the hems with short blade scissors. This confused me at first. However, cutting the hems will make the edges more "ragged" after you wash them.

Stocking BEFORE going into the laundry.
Also, I slightly modified the pattern by just using a piece of ribbon cut to size for my loop (opposed to the instructed piece of fabric). It's what I had on hand and it made this project that much simpler to accomplish.

Ta-Da!!

A Vision to Remember's Christmas Stocking Pattern is a great way to use up all those fabric scraps (admit it, sewist- you just *might* have a couple scraps laying around.... ;-). I did not purchase on fabric for this project. That's a super big win for me! Learn a new skill, save fun... #winning!

I love that I can look at this stocking and remember all the fun past projects that I've sewn up... some holiday pillow wraps out of the Christmas balls, a summer-y dress out of the black and white, a 4th of July outfit for Lil' Miss out of the stars, last year's Christmas dress for Lil' Miss out of the snowflakes.... Sew.Much.Fun!

So, there you have it- a fun, slightly different (for me) sewing project to get you started (or finished) this holiday shopping/making season!! Merry Christmas!!

(BTW, This stocking was the PERFECT size to use as "gift wrap" for a full sized bottle of wine! ;-)

Breakfast with Santa at the American Girl Store 2015

Posted by Heather at Wednesday, December 16, 2015 0 comments

Little girl, BIG dreams!

Last Sunday, as part of her Christmas gift from us, Ted and I surprised Katy with Breakfast with Santa at our local American Girl Store. Reservations for this event were limited and we made them well, well in advance (ie, back in JUNE!).

I sewed up this super cute cute Dolly and Me dress using the Made for Mermaids Brooklyn/Riley Dress PDF sewing patterns. Naturally, Lil' Miss just had to have a fun, new dress for the experience (and, so did Samantha!). This was also my first time purchasing and sewing up some custom knits...! Lots of fun! Because life has been kind of hectic lately, and because, well, it's the holidays... I was sewing these dresses up the night before the event. I hate being last minute but thankfully, I know this pattern by heart and was able to sew them in no time! #sewwinning

Made for Mermaids Brooklyn/Riley Dress

First, we all sat down in the bistro area of the store. We were had our choice of some delicious breakfast dishes- scrambled eggs, french toast, pancakes and more! Katy declared their bacon to be the crispiest, best bacon EVER! Ha!  Each girl (and doll, too!) were also served hot chocolate- with extra whipped cream, of course! (As a side note, both Ted and I agreed that the coffee was particularly strong and delicious! ;-)

Then, while everybody was eating, Santa made his grand entrance. Now, the best part of the whole experience (at least from a parents' perspective) was the fact that Katy just assumed that just going to the AG store and having breakfast was the treat. She didn't realize that she'd get to see Santa, too! When she realized that there was a special guest on top of everything else (breakfast, going to the AG store, etc.).... .well, let's just say that her smile could have lit up the moon...!! Santa made sure to stop at each table and have a little one-on-one time with each girl.

Breakfast with Santa!
(It just so happened that Katy was chosen to take Zippy, the class pet, home the weekend that we went to Breakfast with Santa. So, naturally, Zippy needed to have a picture with Santa, too! ;-)

Breakfast with Santa occurred before store hours. That means that we (and the other guests) had the store all to ourselves for two whole hours. It was really nice to walk around the store leisurely and not be super crowded (especially around Christmas!). Katy had a blast looking at all of the set-ups and even inserting her own Samantha doll into some of the scenes.

We had lots of fun eating Breakfast with Santa! It truly was a memorable experience (for both Katy and us!).

Super Sparkle!

Lil' Miss dressed up as Barbie Super Sparkle for Halloween, this year! Basically, she was a female superhero in a sparkly pink costume (what's not to love?!). Ha!

Just like last year, Katy's best buddy, Connor and his family came over to trick-or-treat. First, we ate a rushed dinner (those kids wanted CANDY!) and then roamed the neighborhood. Katy and Connor had a blast running up ahead trick-or-treating. They came back with a haul of candy and stayed up way past their bedtimes! (Note, Halloween night happened to fall on Daylight Savings, this year. Lil' Miss didn't get the memo- she woke up extra early the next morning...... so much for an extra hour of sleep!).

Mother's Day, May 10, 2015

Another year, another Mother's Day! I wouldn't be celebrating this Hallmark holiday if it weren't for the birth of our beautiful daughter, Katy Grace, five short years ago. The days may sometimes feel oh, so long, but the years just fly right by....! I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey, thus far. I stand back in amazement at the fulfillment I have found in just five short years of motherhood.

So, here's to the late nights, the sleepless nights, and the occasional well-rested nights. Here's to the down and dirty and the fun and happy! Here's to the wonder of childhood; the amazement, the beautiful awe of observing life anew through the eyes and discovery of your own child. Here's to every inquisitive question and every difficult answer. Here's to the hard choices, the difficult choices, the life-altering decisions that define us as a person, as a family and helps to mold and form our child into the person that they will one day become. Here's to the future- our future, her future, the future.

Simply, Happy Mother's Day 2015!

Sewing Pattern Review- Mouse House Creations- The Norah Dress and Tunic (Happy Easter Style!)

Posted by Heather at Sunday, April 05, 2015 1 comments

Happy Easter!!

A couple of weeks ago, I looked through my PDF sewing pattern library for a new pattern to use for Lil' Miss' Easter dress. I came across Mouse House Creations the Norah Dress and Tunic. Easy, simple styling with classic lines and nothing too over-the-top... perfect for our planned casual Easter Brunch with our little family of three.

First, let's talk about the pattern basics:
-The Norah Dress and Tunic comes in sizes 12 months-12 years.
-The Norah Dress and Tunic can be sewn up in wovens are knits.
-The Norah Dress and Tunic has three sleeve length- sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve.
-The Norah Dress and Tunic can be sewn as either a dress or a tunic.
-The Norah Dress and Tunic has three color options- Peter Pan, Peter Pan with faux tails, or none at all.
-The Norah Dress and Tunic also includes directions for how to sew in piping along the color.
-The Norah Dress and Tunic is a simple A-Line dress with a single button/loop closure in the back.
-The  Norah Dress and Tunic PDF sewing pattern includes a yardage chart, a finished measurement chart and a size guide.
-The  Norah Dress and Tunic includes a glossary of terms, a fabric cutting guide and a pattern layout diagram.

After looking at the size guide and comparing it to my model, I sewed up a size 6, dress length Norah Dress. I would HIGHLY recommend taking a moment to measure your model and compare it to the included size chart. I'm glad I did because typically, I sew a size five. However, according to the Norah Dress and Tunic measurements, I needed a size six- a size five wouldn't have given my daughter enough ease in the shoulders.

I did include the piping along the edge of the Peter Pan collar with a contrasting yellow cinch. I sewed short sleeves on my dress with my own addition of a contrast sleeve band. I used cotton woven fabric that I purchased last spring, on clearance from Hancock Fabric. The pink piping, button and yellow cincher all came from my stash.

The Norah Dress and Tunic- Peter Pan Collar with Piping and Cincher.

The Norah Dress and Tunic- Short sleeves with added contrast sleeve band.

Cutting out this dress is a dream- everything is laid out for you in a handy fabric cutting guide. It is especially important to follow the grain of the fabric when cutting out the collar (on the bias).

Sewing up the Norah Dress and Tunic is pretty simple and straightforward. There are lots of helpful pictures throughout the tutorial. Honestly, I believe I sewed this dress up in about two hours- from start to finish.

I will admit, though, that I did stumble a bit at the "Sewing Up the Back Seam" section. the pictures and drawn arrows really had me baffled for a bit. However, I figure it all out and I ended up with a nice, flat back center seam with a lined bodice. I love that there are no zippers to install or button holes to create on the Norah Dress and Tunic! Just a simple button loop (created from fabric) and a hand-sewn button- easy peasy!

The Norah Dress and Tunic- Back Button Detail

There's lots of room for creativity with the Norah Dress and Tunic! Because it is an A-Line dress, the Norah Dress and Tunic would suit all different body shapes. Also, because it's an A-Line dress, there is lots of room on the front for embellishments and creativity. I added large ric-rac at the bottom hem of my dress.

I was really pleased with the length of the Norah Dress and Tunic. For the size six, it falls right below the knees. Juuuust right!

All in all, I'd consider the Norah Dress and Tunic a great wardrobe staple. No zippers, button holes or other closures to fuss with. With the classic A-line profile, it uses minimal fabric and there are no ruffles to bother with. I had lots of fun sewing up The Norah Dress and Tunic!

***Disclosure: "I received a free pattern in order to review this pattern for Mouse House Creations. The opinions expressed here are my own."***
