Counting Down the Days Til Christmas! (A Tutorial)

Posted by Heather at Tuesday, November 29, 2011 0 comments
Advent Calendar Chain 2011

Katy kept trying to "wear" the loops as bracelets and then couldn't understand why the whole chain wasn't something you wear around your neck like a necklace. My little girly girl!

One of the projects I had planned for us to do on the train was an Advent calendar to count down the day until Christmas. We never got around to making it on the train, so we did it today, instead. Below are the step-by-step instructions for how we created this simple, yet meaningful Advent Calendar Chain.

1. First, I cut out 24 strips of decorative paper. I used scrapbooking paper but you could use whatever you have on hand- old cards, construction paper, have the kiddo color pictures, etc. Each strip measured 2" x 6".

2. Next, I cut out one 2"x6" yellow piece of paper for Christmas day.

3. Then, I came up with 25 Christmas/Winter-themed ideas and I typed them onto return address labels that you run through your printer. I catered my labels specifically for Katy and her 21 month-old capabilities.

Labels that I came up with are as follows (in no particular order):
  • Enjoy a mug of hot cocoa!
  • Donate to a Salvation Army red kettle and remember those less fortunate than us.
  • Color a picture to send to one of the great-grandparents.
  • Skype with Nana and Bapa.
  • Skype with Grandma and Pop-Pop.
  • Learn the lyrics to Jingle Bells.
  • Wish a “Merry Christmas!” to everybody you meet, today.
  • Bake a Christmas goodie with Mommy.
  • Have Daddy read The Night Before Christmas aloud.
  • Make a paper snowflake.
  • Watch “A Muppet Christmas Carol.”
  • Take a picture of a Christmas tree.
  • Brave the malls with Mommy and do a little window shopping.
  • Help Mommy wrap some Christmas presents and place them beneath the tree.
  • Find the Christmas Pickle ornament on the Christmas tree.
  • Make an ornament to hang on the tree.
  • Wear the colors red and green, today!
  • Have Daddy read about the true meaning of Christmas from the Bible.
  • Read about the history of the real St. Nicholas.
  • Today is pajama day!
  • Make special red and green placemats to be used for Christmas dinner.
  • Listen to Christmas carols on the radio.
  • Bake a Christmas goodie to be shared with the library staff, thanking them for story time fun!
  • Count how many Christmas wreaths you see, today.
  • Happy Birthday, Jesus! Merry Christmas!

4. Then, I affixed one label to each of the 25 strips, making sure that the label, "Happy Birthday Jesus! Merry Christmas" was put onto the yellow strip for Christmas Day.

5. Now for Katy's "assistance." She "helped" me make loops with the strips of papers, using fun Christmas stickers for each loop. We linked up all of the loops until we had one long chain (making sure that the last and final loop was the yellow Christmas loop). Since all of the strips of paper got mixed up, it will be a "surprise" to see what our fun Advent activity is for that day.

6. I hung the chain in our play room using a festive red ribbon and a Command Hook. Each day in December we will take a loop off of the end until we are done and it is Christmas day.

We are excited for Christmas!

Entertaining a Katy- Train activities

Posted by Heather at Monday, November 28, 2011 0 comments
Color Wonder is WONDERFUL!

Dora the Explorer coloring pages.

Turkey Hand print craft

Cheerio Necklace- Yummy!

Stickers- Lots of them!

Snowman craft
ABC magnets and cookie tray

Christmas tree Vinyl Clings- We had the best decorated seat on the train :-D

Santa Face Magnet

Christmas Wreath hand print craft

Dress Up Dolly Felt Board

"Holding" felt Dolly
Cotton ball Snowman craft

AquaDoodle- All you need is water to draw on this special pad!

While getting ready for our marathon train ride to PA for Thanksgiving, I was somewhat overwhelmed by the fact that we had a total of 24 hours (12 hours up, 12 hours back) to fill with fun, entertaining, educational, exciting, quiet activities with our very active, wiggly, short-attention span toddler. I wanted to make sure we had enough to keep Katy interested (and quiet!) throughout the journey without being too messy or disruptive to other passengers.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..... enter in some pre-planning, a little ingenuity and craftiness on my behalf and some early Christmas gifts (along with a bunch of snacks! :-) and you have a happy, well-behaved Katy (and relieved parents, too!).

We had three backpacks- a red one with a cooler feature for Katy-approved food, a black one for all of Katy's train activities and Katy's small Dora backpack (thanks to Elizabeth!) filled with small toys.

The black backpack contained the following items (in no particular order):

-AquaDoodle
-Thanksgiving Matching Game http://www.dltk-cards.com/memory/index.htm
-Princess Activity pad
-Snowman ornament craft
-Mickey Mouse Coloring book
-Advent Calendar
-Cookie sheet with ABC magnets and Santa Face magnets
-Snowman cotton ball activity
-Christmas Wreath hand print craft
-Christmas Tree vinyl clings
-Color Wonder books and markers
-Fun with Felt binder with four different felt board activities (Dress up Dolly http://familycrafts.about.com/od/paperdolls/tp/paperdolls.htm, Table setting http://www.choosemyplate.gov/tipsresources/printmaterials.html, House and Highways and Byways)
-Cheerio Necklace
-Stickers and construction paper
-Crayons, scissors, glue and tape

I put each activity in a large, labeled brown folder. I had about 20 different activities, total. I placed them in the backpack in the order that I wanted Katy to play with them front to back (i.e. I wanted her to play with the Thanksgiving-themed activities on the way up and the Christmas-themed activities on the way home). Once Katy played with a particular activity, I would put the completed craft back inside of the folder and then move the folder to the back of the backpack. All of this organization may seem a little neurotic (not if you know me, though) but it really helped in confined spaces and made for quick, smooth transitions throughout the train ride.

Katy had a great time with the Crayola Color Wonder! For those of you who are unfamiliar with this creation, it's a coloring book/marker series that doesn't mark on anything but specific Color Wonder paper. In a word, it's WONDERFUL! The child gets to pick the colors and there are no pre-set colors to "reveal" so creativity is not hindered. We got the Disney Princess and Mickey Mouse books for Katy. She practically filled up the Princess book throughout the duration of the trip. Ted and I had fun connecting with our inner child, as well!

One of the big activities that I made for the trip was a binder that I titled, "Fun with Felt!" I took an old three-ring binder and put a piece of blue felt on side and a piece of green felt on the other side. I took four zippered pencil cases and filled them with four different activities that I titled, "Dress up Dolly", "Place Setting", "Highways and Byways", and "House." I used various ideas from web searches but I mostly made up my own ideas to come up with the felt patterns. In theory, Katy could use the same two blue and green felt pieces on the insides of the binder for each of the four activities. Katy only got to the Dress up Dolly activity but she really liked it (this was my personal favorite, as well). She kept trying to "rock" and "hold" the felt doll just like her plastic, 3-D dolly at home.

We didn't get to every activity that I had planned and that's okay. Katy was plenty entertained on both legs of the journey between the various crafts and activities that she did get to and watching and interacting with the other passengers. I'm just glad that I had lots to keep her entertained. Of course, the occasional fruit snack and cookie didn't hurt, either ;-P.

Gobble, Gobble- Thanksgiving in PA/NJ 2011

Making friends on the train ride to PA. Look how sweetly Katy has her head on Ty's shoulder- Daddy wasn't too fond of this move.

Katy's Thanksgiving Dinner- turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, meatballs and pasta- yummy!

Grandma and Pop-Pop Tinkey with their grand-kiddies.

Katy and Granny Petruzzi in their matching shades.

Tinkey family picture- trust me, this was the best of the lot. I sure hope somebody else got a decent picture.

Waiting for the train home at the 30th Street Station in Philly.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150979236545394.769046.771535393&type=1&l=c9b0ff004d

Turkey Day this year was spent in Northeastern PA with the Petruzzi Family. This was Katy (and Ted's!) first holiday meal with the extended family and as Ted later stated, it did not disappoint. It was LOUD! There was lots (and LOTS!) of good food! There were a million different conversations going on at once! There was lots of laughter and everybody had a good time!

For a multitude of reason we decided to take the train (rather than drive or fly) up to Philly and then rent a car and drive the rest of the way. At first, the thought of 12 hours on a train with a toddler was daunting. However, I made sure to plan out enough activities, snacks and new things for Katy to do that time was not an issue. Katy did great on the train! She loved the fact that she was on a "choo-choo train" and she loved to watch the other passengers on the train.

On the way up, we were lucky enough to sit next to a friendly family of three. Katy quickly befriended the kids, Ty, five years old and Tori, three years old. The three kids were fast friends, sharing DVDs, Cheerio necklaces and coloring pages. This really helped pass the time and Katy loved being included with the "big kids!"

We arrived in Philly about 40 minutes late but still managed to get to Granny Petruzzi's right on time. By the time we got to Granny's, Katy was fast asleep- all of that traveling wore her out!

The next day was Thanksgiving Day and we went over to Aunt Karen and Uncle Ron's for dinner. Katy managed to get a (short!) nap in before all of the hub-bub and festivities. There were probably close to 30 people for dinner and 40+, total. We enjoyed the traditional turkey, stuffing (personal favorite!), sweet potatoes, raviolis and homemade meatballs, and more desserts than I could count (pumpkin roll, pumpkin pie, shoo-fly pie, pecan pie, cookies- YUM!).

It was fun to see all of the little ones- Kayla, Katy, Molly, Joel and Carly- get together. The newest generation definitely made the day more interesting. At one point, the kids were playing in another room and Molly fell and started crying. Katy came running into the kitchen where I was standing, talking to a cousin, and started exclaiming, "Problem! Problem!" As my cousin Jaclyn stated, Katy is most certainly my daughter!

We did not go shopping on Black Friday. Instead, we all met up for lunch at the Chinese restaurant and then the cousins went to see the newest Muppet movie (Ted was SOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Grandma and Pop-Pop Tinkey watched the little ones for a mini "Camp Tinkey" while Josh, Delinda, Hope, Eric, Ted and I enjoyed a some child-free time at the movies.

We all enjoyed the Muppet Movie and it got Ted's resounding seal of approval. I walked out of the movie wondering why they hadn't asked to use our art room for the set of Walter's bedroom. I mean, seriously- we had the watch, the backpack and all of the Muppet characters hanging on the walls! Ha!

We drove over to NJ to visit with Ted's parents on Saturday. Like every good grandmother, Nana had cookies (egg, nut, soy free!) waiting for Katy when we arrived. The weather was unseasonably warm so Katy got the chance to ride a tricycle around the circle and wear a "bike-el hat" as she kept referring to the child-sized helmet Nana had waiting for her. Ted and I got to see the progress on Megan and Jason's house while Katy napped. Katy had fun being the center of attention at Nana and Bapa's!

Sunday morning dawned very early as we made our way back to the train station for our last leg of the journey home. The train ride home was uneventful and Katy continued to be a very good girl. The train was VERY crowded! We were about an hour and a half late coming into our station but we made it home safe and sound.

All in all, we had a good trip- no hiccups, tickets or mishaps. I would definitely take the train again with Katy and it was good to celebrate the holidays with family!

Concord Christmas Parade

Mitten Check before we brave the elements and watch the parade.

Watching an old airplane drive (!) down Union Street.

NASCAR car and mascot, Lug Nut driving by.

Yesterday, we continued the holiday festivities by attending the Concord Christmas Parade. The crowds were plentiful and we weren't able to meet up with our Kinetic friends because of all of the people. However, we enjoyed watching all of the floats, bands and various dance, church and other organizations go by. Katy especially loved the floats with loud music and anything resembling a "cool bus" (school bus). She didn't even flinch at the sound of sirens when the police and fire engines rode by.

The Concord Christmas parade is a local tradition and a little slice of "Americana." However, it tends to be LONG and drawn out! We stayed for about two hours but then it started to get a bit chilly and Katy was starting to get fussy. Katy was NOT happy about leaving the parade. As we were walking home, she kept pointing to the direction of the parade saying, "Dat way! That way!"

Christmas Tree Lighting

Trolley Ride with Mommy!

Song and Dance

"Choo-choo!" Train ride teaser in preparation for our big upcoming Thanksgiving adventure!

"Straw-bee" ice cream break at the Creamery.

Best seat in the house- watching the fireworks display from Daddy's shoulders.

Tonight, we skipped right over Turkey Day and joined in the holiday festivities as we took part of the Downtown Concord Christmas Tree Lighting. The event started at six and we made sure that we got in line for the free trolley rides, first. We took a nice (warm!) ride around downtown while sipping our hot apple cider.

Next, we walked down Market Street where there were bouncy houses and face painting for the kiddies. Katy and I rode the kiddie train, too. There was a stage set up where local area children's choirs were singing Christmas-y songs. Katy was quite fascinated with the singing and when we asked her if she wanted to do that next year, she replied, "Yes- singing!"

We took a little break from the chilly elements to duck into the Cabarrus Creamery for some ice cream (hee, hee!).

By the time we had finished our ice cream, it was time for the Christmas tree lights to be turned on. Directly following the Christmas tree lighting, there was a fireworks display which Katy thoroughly enjoyed and was not scared in the least.

We had a fun time making memories as a family and getting into the Christmas spirit, tonight

Kidsville Storytime at Concord Mills Mall

Posted by Heather at Thursday, November 17, 2011 0 comments
Perfect day for a book!

Today, we joined almost 30 other children for a special storytime at the play area at the Concord Mills Mall. The event was sponsored by Kidsville and Simon Kidgets. The storyteller read about four of five books to some very loud (and even some inconsiderate parents who were discussing their lunch plans and not corralling their unruly children), very squirmy, very active toddlers. We didn't win one of the books read but we did go home with some ABC flashcards and book-related activities.

"Things That Go Bump In The Night"

Posted by Heather at Wednesday, November 16, 2011 0 comments
Last night, we were all snoozin' away when at around four AM, we heard a loud bump and then the inevitable wail across the baby monitor. You never saw two adults move so quickly from such a deep slumber. Daddy and I were up and in Katy's room in two seconds flat. Turns out, Katy fell out of her big girl bed. This is the first times she's done this since she's been in the big girl bed (not just a ghetto crib on the floor). Of course, after falling out of bed, Katy did NOT want to go back into her bed for the rest of the night (all two hours that were left of it, that is), so we all (eventually) fell back to sleep in the big bed.

Katy's Lexicon

Posted by Heather at Sunday, November 13, 2011 0 comments
One day (soon) Katy will wake up and start pronouncing all of her words correctly and I know that I'll quickly forget all of her cute mis-pronunciations. So, for the sake of posterity and recording things in the "moment" here is a quick list of words that Katy says in her own, unique way:

"Pam-pake" for pancake
"Barkly" for sparkly
"Brock, Brock" for Chicken
"Moat" for Remote
"Monkey Joe" for anything with a monkey on it
"Sh*&^%" for Spaghetti- she's really trying to say "Sketti"
"Belly" for Battery
"Delly" for Jelly
"Bike-el" for Bicycle
"Cool Bus" for School Bus (she likes to point them out- every time we see one!)
"UpDown" for either Up or Down- she can't tell the difference between the two so she just says them both at the same time.
"On" for either On or Off- once again, she can't tell the difference between the two so everything is just "On."
"Holdher" Katy says this when she wants one of us to hold her. It's like she's talking about herself in the third person. I believe 21 months is just a tad too young to talk about point-of-view narrative, so I let it slide... for now. ;-P

Showing Remorse

Posted by Heather at Saturday, November 12, 2011 0 comments
This afternoon, Katy requested milk for lunch. In a "big girl" cup. Without a lid.

You can imagine what happened- Katy took her first "sip" and got drenched in milk. There was milk EVERYWHERE! We had to quickly strip her down to her pull-up and clean up the mess. Of course, Daddy and I were more than a little upset with the mess and Katy could tell that we were not happy. She started crying (talk about crying over spilled milk!) big crocodile tears which eventually gave way to hiccups and gulps. Once Katy finally got to the point where she could talk she said, "Sorry, Mama!" (for spilling the milk).

This was the first time that Katy has verbally shown remorse for her actions. I found this to be very interesting and a definite development advancement- Katy was showing remorse over her actions and was telling us that she was sorry about it. Remorse, sorrow, asking for forgiveness- very interesting... Of course, after Katy apologized so sweetly, we soon forgot the spill! As we always say, "It's a good thing (that) you're cute, Katy!"

Finished product- Yoda Pancake

"Yum, yum!"

Today was a rare lazy Saturday morning where we were able to enjoy a leisurely breakfast together as a family. So, we pulled out the griddle and Daddy's Star Wars pancake molds and enjoyed a nice, carb-a-licous meal (egg, nut and soy free, of course!).

10 Words

Posted by Heather at Thursday, November 10, 2011 0 comments
While waiting at the doctor's office, today, I saw a poster on the wall in the waiting room. It was title, "Is your child on track?" and it listed various language, physical, cognitive developments a child should hit at certain ages. For Katy's age (I looked at the two year old section), it said that she should consistently have ten words in her vocabulary. Ten words. Hmmm... I wonder what it means when your child has HUNDREDS of words in her vocabulary, puts simple sentences together and parrots back almost every other word you say out loud and she's not yet two?

Something to Smile About

Five minute piggies- sure didn't stay in long but they were cute while they lasted!

"Cheese!"

I.Love.This.FACE!

Nowadays, whenever I tell Katy to "Smile for the camera!" she closes her eyes, scrunches up her face and I usually get a picture resulting in something like this. Tell me this doesn't make you want to SMILE!

Naughty or Nice- Visiting Santa

Posted by Heather at Monday, November 07, 2011 0 comments
Not so sure about Santa, this year...

Katy knows what a snowman is and can point it out in any holiday ad or cardboard cut-out. Ask her who Santa is and she is clueless. In any case, we still took Katy to see Santa. Unlike last year, where Katy was fine going to Santa, this year, Katy took one look at Santa and she started yelling, "Mama! Mama!" She wouldn't let Santa hold her but we did manage to get a picture as long as Daddy held Katy and Santa leaned into the picture frame (kudos to St. Nick- you can tell he's done this gig before!).

*Yes, I realize that it's super early to be doing Santa pictures. However, Bass Pro Shop does them for free and Monday nights are usually a less-crowded time to visit Old St. Nick.

Lumpy, Dumpy Loaf of Bread

Posted by Heather at Monday, November 07, 2011 0 comments
The other day, I made a loaf of bread in the breadmaker that came out less than desirable. It was lumpy. It was dumpy. It was dense. It wasn't very pretty. I kept bemoaning this loaf's lesser qualities saying that it was a lumpy, dumpy loaf of bread.

Fast forward a couple of days. Ted asked Katy what she wanted for lunch, yesterday. She replied, "Lumpy Dumpy!" as she pointed to the remnants of the above-mentioned lumpy, dumpy loaf of bread. I guess she really IS listening! Too funny!

Blogging for Books- When God Created My Toes by Dandi Daley Mackall

Posted by Heather at Monday, November 07, 2011 0 comments

When God Created My Toes by Dandi Daley Mackall is a children’s book about the body and the creation of its various parts. While the book is meant to be light-hearted with a simple, child-like approach to explaining the complex concept of the creation of man, I believe that this book asks too many questions- “Did he know?” “Did he put?”- without any concrete answers.

The sketchy side illustrations by David Hohn are the best part of the book. While the main illustrations are playful and fun, it’s the sketched cartoons that won my heart with its sincerity and sweetness.

In short, I believe that this book fails to answer the central question framed in its title, “When God Created My Toes.”

All PUMP(kin)ED up!

Posted by Heather at Friday, November 04, 2011 0 comments
Enjoying a pumpkin smoothie, or, "Shake, shake!" as Katy calls it (for milkshake).

Helping Mommy make Pumpkin Cranberry Monkey Bread

Here in the Carolinas, the weather is cooler, the nights are crisper, and we are just teetering at the freezing point each night. While we aren't as cold as our family up North, it is definitely getting colder and autumn is slowly fading into winter. Before we pass over fall completely- with it's colorful leaves, Halloween fun, hayrides, jack-o-lanterns and scarecrows- I wanted to share a couple of pumpkin recipes (because pumpkin SCREAMS autumn to me) with the readers of "All Things Katy" (all five of you, that is ;-P).

For the dough:

  • 3 1/4 cups flour, plus extra for kneading
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • Handful of cranberries

For the coating:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 stick butter, melted

For the topping:

  • Caramel Apple Dip

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, and salt.

On stove top, warm milk, water, pumpkin, melted butter and sugar. After mixture is warmish (not hot), add yeast and proof for five minutes.

Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add in the wet ingredients. Using a wooden spoon, gently stir until the dough comes together. Turn out on to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes (or, use stand mixer with dough hook for about four to five minutes). Grease clean bowl and place the dough inside.

Cover and let rise until doubled in size, about an hour.

In the meantime, mix together sugar and melted butter for the coating. Liberally grease bundt pan with butter. Once the dough has risen, shape the ball into a large rectangle. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into roughly equal-sized pieces and roll each piece into a ball (I had about 40 pieces, but you may have more or less).

Dip each ball of dough into the melted butter and then the sugar mixture, layering them with dried cranberries in the bundt pan as you go.

Once you’ve used all the dough, cover the bundt pan and let the dough rise again for another hour.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Bake the bread until golden brown, 30-35 minutes. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before turning out on to a platter. Pour caramel sauce over the bread while it’s still warm. Enjoy!

Pumpkin Smoothies (This is more of a method than a recipe because I'm more of an "add-a-little-of-this-and-a-pinch-of-that kinda girl):

-1/3 Cup Yogurt (I use plain, homemade yogurt)
-1 tsp. sugar (you can sweeten as you like- I bet agave might taste good here, too!)
-dash of cinnamon, if you prefer
-1/4 Cup Pumpkin (I used leftover pumpkin from the monkey bread recipe, above)
-3 ice cubes
-Splash of milk
-1/2 scoop Protein mix or Cappuccino mix (completely optional)

Combine all ingredients into blender, mix until frothy and enjoy! Makes one smoothie. I opted to add a scoop of cappuccino mix to my drink- think SB Pumpkin Spice Iced Latte- Yummy! Obviously, for Katy, I didn't add anything and she drank the whole thing and asked for more. I figure that there is fiber from the pumpkin, antioxidants from the cinnamon and dairy from the milk and yogurt- not too bad of a treat!

Halloween Candy Meltdown, Day 2

"What?!? No candy for breakfast?!?!"

Today, marks day 2 of the Halloween Candy meltdown. Like my one friend commented, it's like kids dream of candy and then, first thing in the morning candy is ALL THEY WANT! Forget cereal. Forget oatmeal. Forget string cheese, fruit, juice, milk or any other semblance of breakfast-y food- candy, candy, CANDY!

Katy "rocks" baby Ethan

The Smilies came over for a play date, today. It was so nice to catch up with Jocelyn and hold sweet baby Ethan. Katy was quite taken with the baby and kept us up-to-date about all of his needs, "Baby crying," "Rocking," "Bottle," "Paci." Our new "Playroom" is getting lots of use!

"Me want CANDY!"

Trying to get into the pantry (where the Halloween stash is kept).

"Woe-is-me"

Our little Cookie Monster was distraught over the fact that Halloween candy was not being served for breakfast, this morning. You never heard such moaning and wailing! Funny thing is, pretty much the only candy from her stash that she can even eat are the dum-dum lollipops. Hello, Terrible Twos- here we come!!
